Samsung introduced the GALAXY Tab S, the world's first tablet with a Super AMOLED display. Affordable Tablets with AMOLED Display Speakers and Sound Quality

So, Samsung has just officially introduced a new line of Galaxy Tab S tablets, which have become the thinnest and lightest tablets with Super AMOLED displays with WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600 pixels, 16:10). We saw two models - 8.4 and 10.5-inch Galaxy Tab S.

Samsung Electronics has officially announced the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung's thinnest and lightest tablet to date. These tablets have Super AMOLED displays and combine the most advanced technologies with a full range of premium content for work and entertainment. Galaxy Tab S also comes with advanced features with improved performance and multitasking. All this is elegantly packaged in a very stylish yet practical design.

"Tablets are becoming a popular device for viewing a variety of content, and for maximum enjoyment, paying attention to the quality of the display has become a very important feature," said JK Shin, executive director and president of Samsung Electronics' mobile division. "With the launch of the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting a new, higher industry bar for the entire mobile industry. These tablets offer consumers the convenience and enjoyment we get from vibrant, true-to-life screen colors and unique, rich features, beautifully packaged in a stylish and ultra-portable mobile phone." device."

You'll see true colors with the new best Super AMOLED displays in the mobile market

Galaxy Tab S represents the next evolution in display technology, delivering a wider range of richer, more vibrant colors. The new Super AMOLED displays in the Galaxy Tab S tablets have a WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600 pixels, 16:10) and they provide coverage of 90% of the Adobe RGB range - this is an incredible result for such displays, especially since the new display has a contrast ratio of 100,000: 1, which allows you to see a deeper and more realistic image, with bright whites and deep blacks.

The Galaxy Tab S doesn't just have a perfect Super AMOLED display. The tablet has a special Adaptive Display feature - the display itself adapts to the environment and conditions - gamma, saturation and sharpness are intelligently adjusted depending on the ambient lighting and color temperature of the environment. Professional operating modes are also pre-installed - AMOLED cinema and AMOLED Photo, but it is also possible to configure the display parameters manually.

In addition, Galaxy Tab S users can fully enjoy the screen in bright sunlight. Advanced technologies make the tablet display bright and easy to view.

Because Super AMOLED technology does not require a constant backlight, the Galaxy Tab S consumes less power than comparable LCD displays. Moreover, the displays themselves have become much thinner and this is reflected in the tablets themselves - both models have a thickness of 6.6 mm. At the same time, the 10.5-inch Galaxy Tab S weighs 465g, and the 8.4-inch model weighs only 294g. The battery here is improved, but there is also a special Ultra-Power Saving Mode - now you don’t have to worry that the tablet will suddenly require you to connect it to a charger.

Stylish design and practical accessories

You can see for yourself that the new tablets have a new stylish design, which has become more modern than previous tablets from other lines.

In addition to presenting the tablets themselves, Samsung also offers new branded accessories that are convenient in a practical sense. Book Cover offers three options for installing the tablet - convenient for reading, watching videos and typing. You yourself have the right to choose the most convenient position for the tablet. Moreover, the convenience is combined with the very compact design of the Book Cover and the tablet will not increase much in thickness. If you need simple protection, then you can choose the Simple Cover - this is the simplest option for protecting the best of tablets.

There is also a Bluetooth Keyboard with a new ergonomic design in an ultra-thin body, which was created exclusively for the Galaxy Tab S tablets. The keyboard is attached using a special mount.

Galaxy Tab S and new features with new capabilities for complete multitasking

Galaxy Tab S delivers unparalleled performance and security with a new set of enhanced features that any user can enjoy. Now you can even take incoming calls without the need for a smartphone, as there is a dedicated call forwarding option using SideSync 3.0. The Galaxy Tab S also allows for full multitasking, meaning you can watch videos, surf the web, share content, take calls at the same time, and not worry about having to close anything. With Quick Connect, your Galaxy Tab S will automatically quickly find and connect to nearby devices for easy content sharing. These features are available for LTE and Wi-Fi versions of tablets.

Additional useful features include Multi User Mode - you can easily create new accounts with an optimized profile for secure and convenient access, and this is protected by a fingerprint scanner. There is also a special Kids mode with its own interface and access to limited functions and limited applications.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S will appear in various variants – Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi + LTE. Models with 16 or 32GB of internal memory and support for MicroSD cards up to 128GB will also be released. Users will be able to choose between 10.5 and 8.4-inch versions. As for the colors of the Galaxy Tab S, so far it has been announced that there will be bronze and white models (Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White). Galaxy Tab S tablets will be available for sale from the end of June 2014.

The other day, the entire Internet was full of reports that the South Korean company Samsung had brought its new tablet to Russia - Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. This device is another representative of the Galaxy tablet line, which is already quite diverse.

As the name of the tablet suggests, the model is equipped with a 7.7-inch screen. However, this is not the main feature of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 screen, but the technology by which it is made: the fact is that the new product is the world's first tablet with a Super AMOLED Plus screen.

The cutting-edge tablet is powered by a dual-core processor. All this is packed in a metal case.

Appearance and connectors

As for the appearance of the tablet, we must pay tribute to Samsung - all models from this manufacturer are always distinguished by their elegance: the Galaxy Tab 7.7, like other tablets in the line, has rounded corners, a metal body, and glass in the screen design. All this makes the tablet stylish on the one hand, and in a classic spirit on the other.

This fact significantly expands the target audience of the model: both businessmen and modern club youth can use it.

The advantage of the model is the format - the small diagonal of the screen allows you to carry the tablet everywhere (in your pocket, bag, hands). The thickness of the tablet is only 7.89 mm, weight is 335 g. These parameters make the model not only compact, but also lightweight - one of the most mobile among other devices.

Another “calling card” of Samsung is minimalism in the design of the tablet: only the necessary controls and input/output ports are located on the surface of the device.

On the front side of the tablet, most of the screen is occupied by the screen, complemented by a special frame designed for comfortable use of the device. Above the screen, if you hold the GT 7.7 vertically, there is a speaker, a light sensor (for automatic brightness adjustment) and a front 2 MP camera. As for the speakers, two more are located at the bottom of the tablet. Together, they reproduce sound well, allowing you to even watch a movie or listen to music without connecting additional audio devices.

But the back view of the tablet makes it different from other models in this model range: the cover of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is made of aluminum and has a polished finish. In addition to respectability, this innovation prevents the model from additional heating, and even if it does heat up, it allows it to cool quickly. On the back cover is the main camera of the device with a resolution of 3 megapixels.

At the bottom end there are connectors for charging and for connecting the tablet to a computer (which also accepts Samsung accessories). Using this “socket” you can connect a USB flash drive or an external monitor to the device via an HDMI cable.

In addition to the connectors at the bottom of the tablet, you can find a microphone - using the SIM card and the “Phone” application, you can make calls from the tablet. However, it is worth noting that it is better to do this using a headset - the port for connecting it is provided in advance (located on the top side of the tablet). You can also connect headphones here.

All tablet controls are located on the right side of the tablet, namely: the device lock button, which, when pressed for a long time, also serves to turn the tablet on and off. There is also a “swing” for adjusting the sound volume.

The left side of the tablet really pleased me. There are two useful connectors on it: a microSD slot (hot-swappable) and a SIM card slot, which means that the tablet has a 3G module. These options position the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 as a full-fledged Internet tablet, which implies the use of all the capabilities of modern tablets.

Conclusion: when you first look at the tablet, you can only be happy for Samsung - this model is a “breakthrough” of the Galaxy tablet series. Just look at the metal body, Super AMOLED Plus screen, and if all this is complemented by excellent sound and stylish design, then you can be sure that the model will be popular with buyers. In addition, the 7.7-inch diagonal makes the tablet a flagship tablet product: this form factor is much more convenient than “large” models due to its mobility and compactness.

Screen and cameras

Now let’s talk in more detail about what has already been mentioned above: the screen and cameras of the tablet. The main feature of the GT 7.7 is the screen equipped with an exclusive Super AMOLED Plus matrix. It is worth mentioning that Samsung can afford this, because it is also its manufacturer.

What are the advantages of the new screen? The fact is that, compared to traditional Amoled, the new matrix has a larger brightness reserve, larger viewing angles, and even blacker blacks. In other words, the black color of the screen looks exactly like black, and not with a grayish tint. Another company model, the Galaxy Note, already has a similar screen, which is equipped with a Super AMOLED screen: with the same brightness of the displays, the GT 7.7 image is of better quality.

The screen resolution is 1280×800 (WXGA) pixels with a diagonal size of 7.7″ (which is not quite a standard size for tablets). The picture is displayed on the screen with high quality and brightness. The maximum value of the brightness slider may be needed only when working in the open sun - the rest of the time its middle position will be enough. The tablet reproduces colors realistically. In a word, the model is perfect for watching videos. As for the screen sensitivity, it supports ten-finger multi-touch.

The front camera of the tablet is standard: its image quality is enough for video communication, but no more. The rear camera is much more attractive: despite the resolution of only 3 megapixels, it produces quite high-quality photographs with good color rendition. By the way, the camera interface has changed and has become closer to the telephone version.

Conclusion: In the eternal struggle between Apple and Samsung, it is worth noting that the South Korean team won this round: the camera of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is better than that of its main competitor, the Apple iPad 2.

Performance and battery life

Let's move on to the most delicious part - the “filling”.

As for the capabilities of the tablet, there is 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB or 64 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded using microSD cards up to 32 GB. Communication modules are presented in the tablet in all their variety: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G. It would be stupid not to equip the new product with GPS, so it is also included here.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is powered by an ARM Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. The difference between this device and Tegra 2 lies in the video chip that is installed inside: NVIDIA, as expected, uses GeForce, while Samsung is equipped with Mali 400MP. The performance of both chips is identical, although sometimes Samsung's brainchild still slows down. Very rarely, but it happens.

Otherwise, there are no complaints: the tablet even plays FullHD video without any hiccups. Formats that the device supports right out of the box are MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV, DivX, Xvid. This fact means that the user does not have to fool around with codecs to watch a movie, since all the most common formats for watching video on the tablet are pre-installed from the start.

Another proof of the similarity of Cortex A9 and Tegra 2 processors: the same games run almost identically on tablets. Practically, because Tegra Zone games are optimized for the native NVIDIA processor (you won’t be able to install Tegra Zone games on a Samsung tablet - you’ll have to use the Android Market).

Several synthetic tests were carried out to determine the power of the processor. To achieve this, several high-demand games were launched on it. The results showed that the Galaxy Tab 7.7 supports all games currently available in the Android Market without problems, even without loss of quality.

There are no complaints about the device’s battery either. The tablet received a battery with a capacity of 5100 mAh, which is more than for a tablet computer. Battery life test results prove it's worth it:

  • Maximum brightness, Full HD video viewing mode, Wi-Fi connection - about 6 hours;
  • Maximum brightness, Full HD video viewing mode, 3G connection - about 5.5 hours;
  • Maximum brightness, Wi-Fi connection, standby time - about 11 hours;
  • Maximum brightness, standby mode without connections - about 11.5 hours;
  • Average brightness, surfing, Wi-Fi connection - about 9 hours;
  • Normal use (medium brightness, Wi-Fi, surfing, games, video) - about 8.5 hours.

Conclusion: an excellent device for gamers around the world, because from now on you don’t have to carry a 10-inch “tablet” with you, but you can get by with the compact, portable GT 7.7 to enjoy the same arsenal of games.

In a word, if you use the tablet as usual, it can easily withstand a full working day (8-10 hours). However, it is difficult to imagine a person who will use the tablet continuously all day, so it is fair to assume that the tablet will work without recharging for about two days. It's also worth noting that with the screen and connections turned off, it barely drains.

Operating system and software

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 runs on the Android 3.2 Honeycomb operating system, which, of course, is planned to be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich very soon. At least according to Samsung.

On top of the OS is an updated TouchWiz shell (which is different from the one installed in the Galaxy Tab 10.1). The differences between the proprietary interface and the basic one are mainly cosmetic changes.

On the desktop there are icons for quick access to Weather, Clock, News, social networks (the set of widgets can be shuffled independently). In addition, you can immediately find shortcuts to the most used applications, which are also configured manually.

At the top of the screen there is a Google search bar and a voice search button. On the right is a button to access all applications plus a button to add new widgets and shortcuts to the desktop.

As already mentioned, the control panel has changed slightly and acquired a telephone appearance: the clock is visible, there is quick access to all switches, all the necessary indicators, and notifications.

Separately, it is worth noting the “Phone” application, which was also mentioned above, which truly turns the tablet into a phone: now you can make calls from the tablet by first installing a SIM card in it.

The screenshot function also deserves attention: now it’s not just saving the desktop, but also quickly editing it. This is reminiscent of a similar feature on the Galaxy Note mini tablet. In addition, the button for taking screenshots can change its purpose (applications, search or cameras).

It is also worth noting the changes that have occurred with the Polaris Office program - now it is a full-fledged text editor. The new version of the program offers all the settings and features that are present in programs such as Microsoft Word. In a word, the program is convenient and comfortable to work with.

The browser has also been updated. The text, as expected, was aligned on the screen and now it is convenient to read information from any website from the tablet.

The Game Hub program is traditionally responsible for games on the tablet (they can be purchased or downloaded).

Applications for viewing news and weather remained unchanged. The tablet can also serve as an alarm clock.

Conclusion: Overall, the tablet's software is very good. We were pleased with many updates and changes (especially those affecting TouchWiz). However, there will probably be people who want to install additional applications to suit their taste, which is expected and will not be difficult.

Competitors

As mentioned earlier, the modern tablet market cannot boast of a large abundance of 7-inch models. This also explains the fact that today there is no viable competitor for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 (especially if we separate the Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 tablets). What the market can offer is rather an alternative.

Its functionality is close to GT 7.7, but the Amazon product is more likely an e-reader, not a tablet. Less productivity; large dimensions; The screen brightness is inferior, despite the fact that the display is made using IPS technology. The much lower price is attractive!

And, of course, the Apple iPad 2 (without which no comparison of tablets is complete) is superior to the GT 7.7 in almost all respects: better graphics performance (can compete with Tegra 3), a good screen, several modifications are available (with different amounts of flash memory). memory, and built-in or not 3G module). One of the shortcomings is that there is no slot for memory cards.

Conclusion

If we say about the new Samsung model in one word, it would be “excellent”. The goal of the new product was to update the line of Galaxy tablets - and it more than coped with it. The model turned out to be stylish (but classic), reliable and comfortable to use (thanks to the metal body), and mobile. The presence of the new Super AMOLED Plus display makes this tablet the best among models of its size.

What is the “fly in the ointment” in this whole barrel of honey? Of course, the price. The tablet is frankly expensive: for a model with a memory capacity of 16 GB you will have to pay 29,990 rubles, and for the 64 GB modification it’s even more expensive - 34,990 rubles. In terms of price, the tablet can only compete with the HTC Flyer - the cost of the GT 7.7 exceeds even the generally accepted expensive Apple iPad 2.

However, anyone who decides to purchase a new tablet will probably not regret it:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 received an original design and functional “filling”;
  • The device is powered by a dual-core processor and is equipped with 1 GB of memory, which allows you to view Full HD video on it in all common formats right out of the box and play the latest games;
  • Compact size, which makes the tablet a mobile portable device.

The tablet will become an assistant to a businessman, a friend to the progressive younger generation, and a gaming panel to gamers. In a word, the new product is “charged” to be in demand.

Ah, if not for the high price, the tablet could confidently be called the best tablet on the “light” PC market!

I brought my new Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet to Russia. This device further expands the Galaxy line, which already includes models with a wide variety of screen sizes and specifications. As its name suggests, this tablet is equipped with a 7.7-inch display, and it is the world's first tablet with a Super AMOLED Plus screen. In addition, the tablet has a powerful dual-core processor, and its body is made of metal.

Appearance

Needless to say, Samsung tablets always turn out beautiful. Stylish rounded edges of the case, glass covering the screen, metal body - all this makes the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet both stylish and classic. Both businessmen and club fashionistas can use it; this tablet is for everyone, without exception. Its small format allows you to carry it with you not only in your bag, but also in your jacket pocket or even in the back pocket of your trousers. Traditionally, the design of the tablet is very minimalist and there are only a few controls and I/O ports on its surface. The thickness of the tablet is only 7.89 mm, and its weight is 335 grams. These parameters make it one of the lightest and most compact devices among all tablet computers.

On the front side of the tablet, a large area is occupied by the screen, along the edges of which there is a special frame, which is convenient for holding the device. Besides the screen, there are a few other elements on the front of the GT 7.7.

Above the screen (if you hold the tablet vertically) there is, firstly, a speaker, which, by the way, reproduces sound very well. Two more speakers are located at the bottom of the tablet. Together, they reproduce sound very well; you can even watch movies or listen to music in a small company without connecting external audio devices. There is also a light sensor here, which automatically adjusts the brightness of the tablet. And of course, there is a 2 megapixel front camera located above the screen.

But from the back the tablet looks different from its “brothers”. This Samsung tablet was the first in the Galaxy line to feature an all-metal body made from brushed aluminum. It looks very cool and elegant, plus the tablet cools quickly and hardly heats up. On the back of the tablet there is a 3MP main camera and a flash.

In addition to two speakers, which are located in two round holes at the bottom of the tablet, there is a connector for charging and connecting the tablet to a computer. By the way, it is into this port that Samsung accessories are inserted, which we wrote about in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 review. With their help, you can attach a USB flash drive to the tablet or connect it to a monitor via an HDMI cable. Also, there is a microphone here, because you can make calls from a tablet using a SIM card and the “Phone” application, but still, making calls from a device that is the size of 3 phones is better through a headset, fortunately, there is a port for connecting it here .

On top of the tablet there is just a headset jack, so you can easily connect it and talk on the phone or even make a video call. Also, of course, you can insert regular headphones here and listen to music from the tablet without anyone else hearing it.

The right side of the tablet contains all the controls that it has. As with all Samsung tablets, there is only a button that locks/unlocks the device and also turns it on/off when pressed for a long time. And also, a “rocker button” to adjust the volume of the tablet.

But on the left there are two connectors, which are good news. Firstly, there is a slot for a microSD memory card, which can be hot-swapped when replaced. And secondly, this is a slot for a SIM card, which means that the tablet has a 3G module, that is, it is a full-fledged Internet tablet that can be used anywhere.

Well, looking at this tablet, one can only be happy for Samsung. They have significantly improved the Galaxy line by releasing the Galaxy Tab 7.7. A metal body, Super AMOLED Plus screen, stylish design and good sound are exactly what users need now. I am sure that the tablet will be popular, since it is one of the best, if not the best tablet at the moment with a diagonal of not 10.1 inches, but only 7.7. This form factor is much more convenient than “large” models, because it is simply impossible to carry them anywhere except in a bag, and this is not always the most convenient option.

Screen and camera

One of the main features of the new GT 7.7 tablet is the screen. Samsung, which is the manufacturer of the display, has equipped the new tablet with an exclusive Super AMOLED Plus matrix. Compared to Amoled, this screen has a larger brightness reserve, the tilt angles have increased, and also, the black color looks exactly black, and not grayish-black. The quality is better than the Galaxy Note, which has Super AMOLED, but the brightness is about the same level.

The screen is a slightly non-standard size, 7.7" with a resolution of 1280 x 800 (WXGA). The information on it is visible in very high quality and brightly. Honestly, at maximum brightness it makes sense to work with it only in very bright sunlight, the rest of the time the central position of the brightness slider is - It's perfect. The colors look realistic and overall I have no complaints about the screen. Videos on this tablet are a pleasure to watch.

As in all modern tablets, the screen supports multi-touch up to 10 touches, that is, based on the number of fingers on both hands, however, it is difficult to imagine in which application this might be needed.

As for the front camera, it is standard for tablets; in general, its quality is enough for video communication, but nothing more. But the main camera, although only 3 megapixels, is quite good. The photos are of high quality and have good color rendition. And anyway, this camera is better than the iPad 2.

By the way, the camera interface has changed, or rather, it has become very similar to the one used in phones.

Filling and tests

Let's move on to the most interesting part, the internal content of the tablet. So, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 is based on an ARM Cortex A9 processor, clocked at 1.4 GHz. The difference from the well-known Tegra 2 is only in the video chip that is installed inside. The NVIDIA chip has GeForce installed, which is understandable, while the Samsung creation has Mali 400MP. In principle, they are very similar in performance, although sometimes you notice that the Samsung tablet slows down, but this happens very rarely. Even FullHD video is played with a bang; by the way, out of the box the tablet supports MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV, DivX, Xvid formats, which means you don’t have to install codecs to watch movies, because these are the most common formats.

By the way, another fact confirms that Cortex A9 and Tegra 2 are very similar processors. The same games run almost identically on both processors, although Cortex still loses a little, because games from the Tegra Zone are optimized for the NVIDIA processor. It's funny, but you can't install games from Tegra Zone on a Samsung tablet; you have to use the regular Android Market.

The tablet has 1GB of RAM, as well as 16 (or 32) GB of internal memory for user data. Moreover, as we have already found out, the memory can be expanded by another 32GB thanks to the microSD slot. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 contains all modern means of communication: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, and, of course, GPS.

We ran several synthetic tests to check the processor's power and evaluate how the tablet would behave when running high-demand games on it.

As you can see from the results, on Galaxy Tab 7.7. Everything currently available in the game market will go. This is great news for all gamers, because now you can not carry a 10.1 tablet with you, but play on a compact little 7.7, and without losing quality.

The battery of the device performed well. I used the tablet for about 6 hours and during this time it was only discharged by 50%, and during this time I was able to watch two 40-minute films, play games, surf the Internet via 3G, conduct a couple of tests, draw and take photographs. During these 5 hours I let go of it only for half an hour, if you add up all the time. This is a very good indicator for a tablet, but it’s not surprising, because the GT 7.7 has a 5100 mAh battery, and this is a huge resource, especially for a tablet computer. But, of course, we conducted separate tests in several operating modes.

  • Wi-Fi on, maximum brightness, Full HD video playback - 5 hours 47 minutes
  • 3G enabled, maximum brightness, Full HD video playback - 5 hours 23 minutes
  • Wi-Fi on, maximum brightness, standby mode - 10 hours 50 minutes
  • All connections are turned off, maximum brightness, standby mode - 11 hours 30 minutes
  • Wi-Fi on, medium brightness, web surfing - 9 hours 14 minutes
  • Wi-Fi on, medium brightness, normal use (Internet, movies, games) - 8 hours 26 minutes

Thus, it becomes clear that if you play with the tablet all day, it will be discharged in 8-10 hours, but most often this does not happen, therefore, the tablet can work for about 2 days without recharging, and it is worth noting that with the screen and connections turned off, it hardly discharges, 2-4% per night.
OS and software

The tablet comes pre-installed with Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS, which will eventually be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, according to Samsung. On top of the system is Samsung's proprietary Touch Wiz shell. It doesn't differ much from the basic Android interface, although there are still some minor cosmetic changes. Moreover, this tablet comes with an updated version of Touch Wiz, which is different from the one installed in the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

This is what the interface looks like in vertical and horizontal modes. Widgets have been placed on the home screen for quick access to weather, clocks, news, and updates from social networks. networks, but these widgets can be customized yourself. In addition to them, shortcuts to the most used applications are included here for quick access. All shortcuts can also be customized. At the top left is the Google search bar and a button for voice search. On the right is a button to access all applications and a button to add new widgets or shortcuts to the desktop.

The notification panel has changed slightly, now it is similar to the panel used in Samsung phones. There is quick access to all switches, the clock and all the necessary indicators are visible, the ability to adjust brightness, control music, and of course, display all notifications about certain events occurring on the tablet.

The notes application allows you to draw and write text, and then save or immediately send it to friends via the Internet or Bluetooth. The abundance of settings will allow you to make the drawing the way you want.

The great news is that this tablet has a Phone app that you can use to make calls, as long as you have a SIM card installed in your tablet, of course.

The function of taking screenshots has been nicely updated. Now it’s not just about saving a desktop image, but also the ability to quickly edit it. After clicking on the screenshot button, a special program opens where you can write something over it or cut out the desired piece from the entire screen. This is very similar to the feature that is already available on the Galaxy Note mobile phone.

By the way, the screenshot button itself (4th left below) can be reconfigured and made it responsible for applications, search or camera. In principle, this is convenient, because not everyone needs screenshots on a tablet.

The Polaris Office program has been superbly updated. Now this is not just an application for viewing and easily editing documents uploaded to a tablet, but a full-fledged text editor that is convenient to use. All sorts of settings, properties, etc. are available, which were so lacking earlier and which have long been present in desktop versions of products, for example, Microsoft Word.

But the applications for viewing news and weather remained unchanged, although they are still convenient and can be accessed from widgets on the desktop.

The built-in browser has also been updated. The main feature that many users expected from this browser was text alignment to fit the screen. Now it’s convenient to read information on any website from your tablet. See for yourself in the example above how GT 7.7 adapts the text for comfortable reading.

Many people use their mobile phone as an alarm clock. Since this tablet has a Phone application, there is also an alarm clock.

Traditionally, the Game Hub is responsible for games on a Samsung tablet; there you can find interesting games and immediately buy or download them.

In general, the set of software for the tablet is not bad, but you will probably still have to install some more applications. We were pleased with many of the changes that affected TouchWiz and applications that became a little more convenient.

Competitors

The main competitors at the moment are only a few tablets. Not all companies involved in the production of portable devices have yet made versions of tablet PCs with a 7-inch screen diagonal. So, these are tablets: HTC Flyer, Huawei Mediapad s7, Acer A100. Yes, there are other 7" tablets, but they don't even come close to the performance of the Galaxy Tab 7.7.

This is what a Samsung tablet looks like next to a Huawei one, as you can see, Super AMOLED Plus is doing its job, the black color remains black and not gray. As for the rest of the characteristics, in principle, the tablets are similar; Huawei was also made not so long ago. But Samsung is thinner and lighter than its Chinese competitor, and this sometimes plays a decisive role.

It was a very interesting model - not only because of the unusual screen diagonal, but also thanks to the Super AMOLED Plus matrix. Unfortunately, the cost of the tablet was very high, so it did not achieve mass success. But the successor to this device was never released: to this day, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 remains the only tablet with an AMOLED screen on the Russian market. The Americans were luckier: back in the summer they released another model with a similar screen - Toshiba Excite 7.7. We will meet her today.

Toshiba does not sell tablets on the Russian market. And in the American market there are two lines of tablets available: Excite (more expensive) and Thrive (cheaper). Thrive tablets run NVIDIA Tegra 2 and ship with Android 3.2, which means it's generally a pretty outdated solution. The Excite line is more interesting. It includes four models: one with a diagonal of 7.7 inches and three with a diagonal of 10.1 inches.

The 10.1-inch models are very attractive in terms of price and performance, but they don't have anything out of the ordinary that would justify buying a device abroad (with subsequent shipping costs and the risk of lack of warranty service). The Excite 7.7 model is a different matter. Its main feature is the AMOLED screen. Let us repeat that, besides Toshiba, only Samsung has released a tablet with a display based on an organic LED matrix. So, obviously, Excite 7.7 must be compared with the Galaxy Tab 7.7, and in addition to it, it is worth including two other hits of this year in the comparison - iPad mini and Google Nexus 7.

It turns out to be an interesting picture. In terms of cost (including delivery from the States), Toshiba Excite 7.7 will be cheaper than Samsung, but significantly more expensive than iPad mini and Google Nexus 7. As for the capabilities/characteristics, Toshiba Excite 7.7 is perhaps a little ahead in terms of them.

To complete the picture, here is a complete list of Toshiba Excite 7.7 specifications.

As you can see, the tablet does not support HDMI, nor does it support MHL. But there is information on the Internet about a special docking station for Toshiba Excite 7.7 - multi-dock (catalog price - $80), which allows (even without root access) to connect two USB drives and an external screen via HDMI to the tablet. Alas, we were unable to find this wonderful accessory for sale.

Well, let's take a closer look at the tablet.

Equipment

The tablet is sold in an unusually shaped box that opens like a breaking loaf. On the box we see a photo of the tablet itself, as well as fairly detailed technical specifications of the device.

The package is minimalist: a short user manual, a set of advertising leaflets, an American-style charger and a USB cable.

Design

The appearance of the tablet makes a very pleasant impression. I would even say that among seven-inch tablets, Excite 7.7 is among the best in terms of design. You can't see it from the photo below, but the device really looks expensive and high quality.

Its main advantage is the metal back panel with a corrugated texture. This sets the Excite 7.7 apart from the mostly plastic Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. The only color available for the device is called Champagne Silver by the manufacturer (the material itself is Etched Aluminum).

The edges of the device also look very nice (although they are not made of metal, but of plastic - however, painted to look like metal). In addition, it is worth noting two eye-catching speakers on the bottom edge. Between the speakers is a proprietary docking connector (through which the tablet is charged and synchronized with the computer).

Regarding the location of buttons and connectors, it is worth paying attention to the presence of Micro-USB (on the right side), which supports connecting external drives. That is, you can, using an adapter from USB Female Type A to Micro-USB, connect a regular flash drive to the tablet and access the files on it.

In addition to Micro-USB, on the right side there is a 3.5 mm jack for a headset/microphone and a microSD slot.

All buttons are located on the top edge: these are Power, the screen orientation lock lever and the volume rocker.

The left side of the device is free of any connectors.

Alas, there is no HDMI connector (Samsung didn’t have it either) or 3G (Samsung did have that).

Overall, the design of the Toshiba Excite 7.7 seems very good to us. And the build quality did not disappoint.

Screen

A detailed examination of the screen using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his conclusion.

The tablet screen is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface and, judging by the reflection of bright light sources in it, has an anti-glare filter. There is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen, so fingerprints do not appear as quickly as with regular glass, but are easier to remove.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was 138 cd/m², and the minimum was 31 cd/m². These values were obtained by displaying the white field almost over the entire screen. However, this tablet has a non-switchable automatic brightness adjustment depending on the area of the white field (rather, on the overall lightness of the image). Therefore, with a ratio of areas of 50/50 black field to white, the maximum brightness of the white field is 238 cd/m², and with a ratio of 75/25 - 250 cd/m². That is, the less white there is on the screen, the brighter it is. Taking this into account, as well as less bleaching of the black field under the influence of external light, the readability of this screen in conditions of bright external illumination is higher than that of typical LCD screens.

Automatic brightness adjustment works based on the light sensor (it is located to the right of the front camera indicator): in complete darkness, the brightness is reduced to at least 31 cd/m² (acceptable), in office conditions the brightness is set at 60 cd/m² (normal), in very bright in a lit environment - increases to 138 cd/m² (to the maximum, data was obtained when the white field was displayed almost on the entire screen), while the screen brightness automatically changes both up and down.

This tablet uses an HD AMOLED matrix (active matrix organic light-emitting diodes), which provides special properties: the screen has very good viewing angles, and the black color is so black that the contrast parameter is simply not applicable in this case. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the white field is very good. Switching the state of the matrix elements is actually carried out instantly, so the response time can be equated to 0. The gamma curve constructed using 32 points did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The bend in the resulting gamma curve can be explained by an automatic change in brightness as the overall lightness of the image increases. This bend does not allow us to reliably calculate the exponent of the approximating power function (it is shown in the graph simply to maintain continuity between tests):

The color gamut is very wide, much wider than sRGB:

Apparently the components are well separated. The spectra confirm this:

As a result, the colors are highly oversaturated and unnatural. The fact that in the given spectra the spectrum of the white field lies below the spectra of the components also indicates a decrease in brightness when the white field is displayed on the entire screen. The balance in color temperature is average, since shades of gray have a high color temperature:

The deviation from the spectrum of a completely black body (delta E) is less than 10, which in this case is very good (dark areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not of great importance, and the measurement error at low brightness is large):

Apparently, the Toshiba AT270 tablet has the same HD AMOLED matrix as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet. However, the AT270 does not automatically turn off brightness reduction as the overall lightness of the image increases. Also, this tablet does not have the ability to select a color profile with a reduced color gamut. As a result, using the Toshiba AT270 to view photos and movies is somewhat problematic - especially for films, since, for example, it is difficult to feel the drama of the moment if the characters' faces are carrot-red instead of normal skin tones. It turns out that, despite the great potential in the form of high (formally infinite) contrast, zero switching time and good readability in bright external light, the manufacturer was unable to create a screen with good consumer properties. All you had to do was select a profile with sRGB coverage, as is done, for example, in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Note that not all of the site’s editorial staff who saw the tablet agreed with this verdict. Some of them really liked the bright, rich colors of the Toshiba Excite 7.7. But there were also those who agreed that the colors were too harsh and unnatural, tiring the eyes. In general, before buying this device (especially if it will sooner or later enter the Russian market), it makes sense to hold it in your hands and try to form your opinion, since color perception is a rather subjective thing, and the main thing here is whether you like it or not, not the numbers testing.

The tablet supports multiple touches (multitouch). 10 touches are recognized simultaneously.

Performance and battery life

The Toshiba Excite 7.7 tablet runs on the well-known NVIDIA Tegra 3 in the basic modification T30, which assumes a frequency of each CPU core of 1.4 GHz when loading multiple cores and a GPU frequency of 512 MHz. Note that Google Nexus 7 has a less productive modification of the same SoC.

In terms of performance, there are no surprises for us here, so we will simply present the test results in a general table and briefly comment on the overall result.

As we can see, the Toshiba Excite 7.7 outperforms the Galaxy Tab 7.7 in all benchmarks. Moreover, in some tests (AnTuTu, Geekbench) Toshiba's superiority over Google Nexus 7 is obvious, which is logical, since Toshiba has a more powerful version of Tegra 3. However, in general, comparisons must be made with caution, since the tablets were tested under different versions of the operating system (Samsung - Android 3.2, Google - Android 4.1, Toshiba - Android 4.0) and, in the case of Google and Toshiba, on different browsers (starting from OS version 4.1, Google pre-installs the Chrome browser). Therefore, say, the SunSpider results (where the Toshiba device lost to the Google tablet) are not very indicative.

We have included the results of GLBenchmark 2.5.1, which tests 3D performance, in a separate table.

iPad mini Google Nexus 7
GLBenchmark 2.5 Egypt HD (C24Z16)12 fps24 fps14 fps
GLBenchmark 2.5 Egypt HD (C24Z16 Offscreen)8.5 fps14 fps9.4 fps

GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Classic (C16Z16)54 fps59 fps55 fps
GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt Classic (C16Z16 Offscreen)31 fps49 fps32 fps

But here, oddly enough, Toshiba loses to Google, although the screen resolution of these tablets is identical. However, the difference is not too big - the difference between Excite 7.7 and iPad mini is much greater. If Apple's tablet lost in processor benchmarks, then 3D graphics is the territory in which it still dominates.

In general, we can summarize that the Toshiba Excite 7.7 is one of the most powerful tablets of a similar diagonal (7 or 8 inches) on the market. Although it cannot be called an undisputed leader: it overtakes the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, but remains on the same level (overtaking in some ways, inferior in others) with the iPad mini and Google Nexus 7.

Of course, the question immediately arises: how does this affect battery life? However, our tests showed that all the worries about this were in vain: Excite 7.7 not only was not inferior to Google Nexus 7 and iPad mini, but also significantly surpassed them. Perhaps the reason is the efficiency of the AMOLED screen.

Thus, Toshiba Excite 7.7 is not only one of the most economical, but also one of the longest-lasting tablets among models of a similar diagonal.

Operating system and applications

The tablet is sold with pre-installed Android 4.0.3 OS. After testing, Android 4.1 firmware was released for it, but all screenshots in this article were taken from Android 4.0.3 firmware.

It should be noted that both in terms of the set of applications and the design of the desktop, the manufacturer took good care of the users. On the desktop we see six groups of icons, which contain pre-installed applications that are not included in the standard Android package (with the exception of the Google folder).

Among these applications are Adobe Reader, QuickOffice Light HD (a free version of the office suite that allows you to open Word, Excel, PDF and PowerPoint documents), Dice Player, Amazon Kindle reader, Amazon MP3 music purchasing service (alas, useless in Russia), a set of desktop games (Klondike, Hearts, Backgammon, etc.), a service for playing popular games for free (subject to viewing advertisements)...

And also Kaspersky anti-virus for tablets, the News Place news service (an aggregator of news from Western sites), and a very good file manager of Toshiba’s own development.

Let us also note an interesting detail: when scrolling the page slowly in the browser, the image darkens a little and turns blue. What this is connected with is unknown, but even after installing the new firmware the problem remained.

However, overall we were very pleased with the software component of Toshiba Excite 7.7. It's not often that you come across so many additional applications that are not included in the traditional package.

Cameras

The Toshiba tablet, as befits a modern tablet, is equipped with two cameras: front (for video communication) and rear. The presence of a rear camera is a big plus compared to the Google Nexus 7; in addition, its resolution (5 MP) is higher than that of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7.

The quality of the rear camera is quite decent. Here is a fragment of a photo from a building window during the day:

The clarity is good, artifacts are not noticeable, color rendition is normal.

The next frame is a fragment of a photograph of a sheet of paper lying on the windowsill.

There is already a lot of dirt here, but the text is readable everywhere (and a similar situation was with all the takes), so the tablet’s camera can be safely used to photograph any documents and texts.

But, unfortunately, we were not pleased with the video shot with the rear camera. Firstly, its maximum resolution is only 720p (while the same iPad mini shoots 1080p), and secondly, the image turns out unnatural and too blurry. This is, of course, better than budget tablets, but still far from what is desired. Sample video (3GP, 30.6 MB) can be downloaded.

The front camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels and is quite suitable for video communication.

conclusions

Toshiba Excite 7.7 is a very interesting and attractive tablet in a number of ways, which is worth paying attention to those buyers who a year ago wanted to buy the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, but for some reason did not make this desire come true. Excite 7.7 has a similar AMOLED screen and a better design than Samsung. And also significantly higher productivity. The main obstacle is the lack of Excite 7.7 on official sale in Russia. Therefore, you will have to order it from Western online stores. But for enthusiasts this shouldn't be a big problem.

One can only complain that tablets with AMOLED screens are such a rarity on the market. Apparently, manufacturers of AMOLED matrices are not yet able to produce a sufficient number of products of the required quality and characteristics, so tablets with AMOLED screens (as opposed to tablets with IPS) are not yet becoming mass-produced. But manufacturers will probably face this problem sooner or later. And at the same time, they will develop and begin pre-installing software on all devices that allows you to conveniently configure screen parameters so that the advantages of AMOLED screens do not turn into disadvantages.

For its combination of an AMOLED screen and a sleek body with a metal back, we're awarding the Toshiba Excite 7.7 our Editors' Original Design Award.

The new S-series tablet is available in two sizes: you have a choice between 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch diagonals. The displays of both models have something in common: the resolution is 2560x1600 pixels and they are produced not on ordinary liquid crystal panels, but using AMOLED technology.

Colors on this type of matrix look more saturated than on conventional screens. In addition to fiery red, rich green and deep blue, rich black color is also pleasantly pleasing. The reason for such color intensity lies in the technology itself: unlike liquid crystal screens, the OLED panel does not have a backlight. Or rather, each subpixel illuminates itself. When displaying black, the pixel becomes truly black, since not only does it not glow, but the backlight does not shine through it either.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: Cool performance

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: even thinner than the iPad mini (top)

Inside the 10.5-inch Galaxy tablet is powered by a Samsung Exynos 5420 Octa processor that clocks at 1.9 GHz. It is helped by 3 GB of RAM. This combination gives the device, for the most part, superior performance.

Stuttering occurs only occasionally, applications launch quickly, and slowdowns almost never interfere. Until now, we have seen such serious power only on very few Android tablets. At first glance, the menu seems very familiar: the shell is very similar to that of the Galaxy S5 smartphone.

It immediately becomes clear to the user that he has a tablet made by Samsung in his hands. Additionally, at approximately 6.6mm thick, this model is thinner than Apple's iPad mini Retina. At the same time, Samsung uses materials that are not as noble as Apple to make the case: the hardware is packaged in a plastic case. Overall, the Galaxy Tab S 10.5's build quality is okay, but it's not a standout feature of the device.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: Cool software features, lots of accessories

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: with cool accessories

Samsung has modified the Android shell and endowed the Tab S 10.5 with software functionality that no other tablet can offer. In particular, with the help of “Seamless Connectivity” you can connect the tablet with the Gear Fit fitness bracelet, and with the help of “Sidesync 3.0” you can broadcast the image from your smartphone directly to the tablet display. An example of the use of such interesting functions is telephony. Take incoming calls directly on the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 - and leave your Galaxy S5 where it belongs. In addition, you can easily move files from your tablet to your smartphone and vice versa.

In terms of classic accessories, the offer is quite large. In particular, Samsung sells two different types of cases for this tablet. One of them serves purely to protect the surface of the display so that it does not get scratched while it is in the bag. It doesn't make the tablet any noticeably thicker. The second cover is Book-Cover. This case essentially serves as a stand and can be compared to Apple's Flipcover. Both accessories are available in 6 different colors. In addition, to help you use your tablet more productively, a dedicated Bluetooth keyboard is available.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: weak point - mobility

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5: with 8MP camera on the back

Overall, the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 offers good battery life. You can watch videos without recharging the tablet for more than 9 hours, but surf the web, on the contrary, only 5 hours 26 minutes.

It will take about 5 hours and 30 minutes to restore the battery's strength - this is a very long time compared to other tablets. Here Samsung should increase the power of the power supply. This is how an AMOLED tablet loses important rating points in the Mobility test category.

For data storage, Samsung offers a built-in memory capacity of only 16 GB. It's not much, but with a microSD card you can expand the storage without spending a lot of money. The rest of the equipment is quite convincing: the tablet has a fast ac standard WLAN module, a fingerprint scanner and an 8 megapixel camera on the rear panel.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014: alternative

If you're looking for an alternative with an AMOLED display, there won't be much choice. Only the “little sister”, the 8.4-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S, has the new AMOLED technology. It is equipped to a similarly good standard and received good marks during our test tests. This model offers the same high performance and equipment at a reasonable price - about 21 thousand rubles. What was convincing in our test lab was, first of all, the remarkable display, which works with a stylus and has a wide range of functionality for productive use. This tablet also has a 4G module. This means that you can surf the web on mobile at LTE speeds.
